The Wood Thrush is a polka-dotted delight with a distinctive, ascending call that sounds like a rising scale on a wind instrument. They are smaller than robins (and closely related to them) and like to hop along the forest floor hunting for insects like worms and beetles. Males arrive at breeding grounds ahead of females to stake their claim in nests raised in the treetops and can be heard making staccato alarm sounds when they need to defend their turf.
You can spot Wood Thrushes during the summer in eastern forests of the U.S., and come winter they’ll head down to tropical climates in Mexico.
Fun fact: The flute-like part of the Wood Thrush’s song, which many people recognize, is actually part two of a three-part song. Males can sing more than 50 distinct songs.

All through the sultry hours of June,
From morning blithe to golden noon,
And till the star of evening climbs
The gray-blue East, a world too soon,
There sings a Thrush amid the limes.
