Imagine the color of the Caribbean sea, a sparkling sapphire, and the crisp spring sky, and you might envision the vivid cerulean of the male Mountain Bluebird. They feed on airborne insects and some berries, especially during winter, when they gather in flocks by the hundreds, sometimes congregating with Western Bluebirds. (Birds of a blue feather…)
These birds are all about their nests; they like to arrive early to nesting grounds to score the best tree cavities (many that were originally created by woodpeckers) before Tree Swallows and Northern Flickers claim them. You may attract them to your own backyard by creating a nesting box made to their liking.
