Bird of the Week: The Burrowing Owl
Found in North and South America
Hear Their Calls
Burrowing Owls are different from the tree-dwelling owls we often think of in one big way: they live underground. They take over burrows that are usually dug by other animals such as tortoises or prairie dogs. These small birds seem constantly surprised, their yellow, expressive eyes often widened in a shocked expression. Burrowing Owls are able to swoop down on prey like their cousins who hang out at higher elevations, but they can also be seen walking around on the ground, long legs on the move, looking for their prey of insects and small mammals.
These owls are extremely well-camouflaged, so if you’d like to find one, look for dirt mounds around burrow entrances in the early morning or late evening.
Fun fact: When Burrowing Owls are ready to lay their eggs, they coat their burrow entrances with animal feces so that the owls can easily eat the dung beetles and other insects that are attracted to it—kind of like ordering delivery.

Introducing our New Seed…
You’ve asked, and we’ve answered! Black Oil Sunflower is perhaps the most coveted seed amongst our feathered friends, and certainly a fan favorite for bird lovers. It has the highest healthy fat content of any sunflower variety and it’s packed with proteins, nutrients and minerals.
What’s more, the shell of the Black Oil Sunflower Seed is soft, allowing for almost any bird to crack it open. Our premium organic Black Oil Sunflower blend provides valuable nutrition that will give wild birds the energy they need in all seasons!
Even better, Subscribers to the Flyer can receive $15 off the purchase of any carton using the code FLYINGBLACKOIL at checkout. Looking for an even better gift? Save even more by subscribing to receive a fresh carton every 2-8 weeks and save $30 off your first carton using the code FLYINGBLACKOILSUB. (Offer valid through February 28.)

When May bedecks the naked trees
With tassels and embroideries,
And many blue-eyed violets beam
Along the edges of the stream,
I hear a voice that seems to say,
Now near at hand, now far away,
“Witchery—witchery—witchery.”
