I think this is what our grandparents called “necking.” (via @exploreorg)
The Atlantic Puffin — the official bird of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada — seems like it would enjoy a good sea shanty. This expert fisher lives along (and on, during the winter) the Atlantic Ocean, which holds its briny food source. Puffins can dive up to 200 feet below the water in search of fish, shrimp, and mollusks. It often returns to its seaside burrow with a mouth full of tiny silver fish to feed its young.
These birds are nicknamed the “clowns of the sea” because of their expressive faces and beaks, which look as though they’ve been painted with bright orange and red stripes. During their breeding season (April through August) they’ll nest in colonies of thousands on islands. They can stay with the same mate year after year, and partners show each other affection by rapidly rubbing their beaks together. Adorable!
