Organic bird seed: The benefits of a natural choice for wild birds

When it comes to feeding wild birds, one of the most important factors to consider is the type of bird seed you use. Conventional bird seed is grown using synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemicals, which can be harmful to wildlife. Organic bird seed (such as the premium organic bird seed from Flying Colors), on the other hand, is grown in accordance with organic standards, meaning that it is free from toxic chemicals, making it a much healthier choice for wild birds.

Organic bird seed is grown without the use of synthetic fertilizers or pesticides, meaning that the birds who eat it are not exposed to any potentially harmful chemicals. This is especially important for birds that are vulnerable to the effects of these chemicals, such as songbirds. Organic bird seed is also free from genetically modified organisms (GMOs), which have been linked to various health problems in some bird species.

The heavy use of synthetic fertilizers in conventional farming can also leach into nearby groundwater and adversely affect the surrounding ecosystem, making organic bird seed better for the environment on a much larger level. Organic farming methods, on the other hand, rely on natural fertilizers, such as compost and manure, which are much less likely to negatively impact the surrounding ecosystems. Organic farming practices also encourage the cycling of resources, maintain ecological balance, and preserve biodiversity. According to the USDA organic regulations, certified organic crop and livestock producers must use materials approved for use in organic production and improve or conserve natural resources like soil and water quality. This means that organic systems attempt to imitate nature by preserving biodiversity on farms. Conventional bird seed is often produced using unsustainable farming methods, such as monoculture, which can lead to soil erosion and other environmental problems. Organic bird seed, on the other hand, is produced using sustainable farming methods, such as crop rotation, which helps to preserve the soil and promote biodiversity.

Beyond being void of toxic chemicals, organic bird seed also benefits the birds themselves in other ways too. Organic bird seed is usually fresher than conventional seeds, as they are not exposed to long-term storage or irradiation. Fresh organic seeds are generally more nutritious than seeds that have been stored for a long time because they have higher levels of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients due to being closer to the time they were harvested. Organic seeds also often contain higher levels of vitamins and minerals than conventional seeds due to their content of naturally-occurring micronutrients since it is less likely to contain preservatives and other additives that are often found in conventional bird seed.

When it comes to feeding wild birds, organic bird seed is the clear choice. Organic bird seed is free from potentially harmful chemicals, it is better for the environment, it is more nutritious for the birds, and it is produced using sustainable farming methods. So, the next time you are looking for bird seed, make sure to choose organic – it’s a healthier and more sustainable choice!
